Walnut Juglans nigra


Appearance

Walnut has an attractive heartwood that matures into a rich dark-brown to purplish-black color. The sapwood is a creamy white to tan, transitioning to blue-grey as it approaches the heart. Generally it is straight grained, but often is wavy or curly. It's texture is coarse, but consistent.

Where it Grows

Walnut grows widely through the US, Canada, and parts of South America. It can reach heights of 150 ft. with a trunk diameter of 4-6 ft.

Properties

It weighs about 3-4 lbs per board foot and requires great care in drying to avoid degradation and checking.

Uses

Walnut is common in rifle buts and gunstocks, high-end cabinetry, musical instruments, flooring, and decorative veneer.
