Maple Acer spp.


Appearance

Maple has a sapwood that is indistinguishable from the heartwood and creamy-white in color. The grain is close and straight with distinctive growth rings and a fine, even texture.

Where it Grows

There are more than 10 species of maple that grow throughout Canada, the Eastern US, and the Pacific Coast. Maple can reach heights of 130 ft with a trunk diameter of 2-4 ft.

Properties

The weight of this wood is around 3 lbs per board foot and dries slowly. There is little degrade in the drying process and mild movement in use.

Uses

Maple is popular in furniture, plywood, interior joinery, and flooring. It is also a popular choice for musical instruments and the action in pianos.
